Need balance for resolution

by Paul Hershberger, Goshen, Ind.

Regarding "MC USA Responds to Palestinian Christians' Appeal"(December 2011): When there are disagreements, a settlement usually needs the advocates of each side to acknowledge legitimacy in the other's point of view. That's one of the things often lacking in the Israeli-Palestinian dispute. While the support of some Mennonites for one side in the conflict may be admirable, it may not be helpful in the long run if there is not commensurate backing for the legitimate concerns of the other.

Some examples in response to Kairos Palestine: It is true that Israel is in violation of United Nations' declarations, including settlements in the West Bank; it is also true that when Arabs resist the existence of an Israeli state, that is counter to the U.N. When the Kairos Palestine document calls for an end to illegal Israeli occupation, it is not talking about the West Bank; it means the state's existence. Does Mennonite Church USA concur? A response of Mennonite Church USA to Kairos Palestine should show sympathy to the Palestinians. It should also reflect the balance needed to finally bring this dispute to an end.
