Letter sent to Bush about border wall

by Mennonite Church USA

Print Article

NEWTON, Kan.—Jim Schrag, executive director of Mennonite Church USA, and Sharon Waltner, moderator, wrote a letter to President Bush to express the denomination’s concern about the negative impacts of the proposed 700-mile wall on the four United States border states.

The letter states: “We suggest that a better application for national security would be to assist the Mexican economy so people can find jobs in their home towns in Mexico with sufficient income to support their families. Savings from not building an ineffective wall should be used to reform our immigration system, whose backlogs and prolonged legalities make lawful entry into the United States very difficult.”—Mennonite Church USA
