Not ashamed of the gospel
by Sarah J. Yoder, Middlebury, Ind.
“Principled Liberalism” (Aug. 7) made me examine what I believe, but we don’t view Christ’s role in the same way.
I agree with the principals and strengths he describes but because I’m a Christian, not because I’m a liberal. Christ didn’t put the world’s labels on people. I don’t call myself liberal or conservative. Those are political terms, and there are candidates in both camps who don’t deserve my vote.
Interdependence, justice, respect, service, nonviolent peace building and community are the means, not the end. I agree with John Roth (July 3); our church has to embrace the gospel. To believe all people are guided by a conscience is naive and implies there aren’t spiritual forces at work around us.
I’m sorry that many liberals feel marginalized in Mennonite Church USA. I pray that our church can promote all the good things Koehn talked about while saying with Paul, “I’m not ashamed of the gospel.”
