Print Article

Leya Mulabo of Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), was among the graduates who received a degree in missiology at the annual graduation ceremonies of the Centre Universitaire de Missiologie in Kinshasa on Aug. 25. She is a member of the Congo Mennonite Church.

Mulabo is one of five African women receiving scholarships for theological studies through the African Anabaptist Women Theologian’s Committee and Les Amis of Mennonite Women USA. The program is facilitated by Mennonite World Conference (MWC). The graduation speaker was Nzash Lumeya, founder of the school, who is originally from the DRC and living in Fresno, Calif.

Mulabo’s mentor, Sidonie Swana, a Congolese member of the African Anabaptist Women Theologians committee, encouraged her to study theology.

Her vision is to pass on the gift she has received by working with young women in the church to build self-esteem and awareness of the needs and opportunities for women in ministry.

Women in several African countries studying theology or serving in various ministry roles have been meeting for several years. In 2003, at the MWC global assembly in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, they held workshops, addressed the General Council and met with Latin American women. One significant development, as a result of that 2003 gathering, is the relationship between the African Women Theologians and Mennonite Women USA.—Eleanor Miller of Mennonite World Conference
