DULAC, La.—The Mennonite Disaster Service house started by volunteers at the Mennonite Church USA convention in San José, Calif., was completed on Aug. 3 in Dulac, La., for the Mac and Lydia Lodrigue family.
The Lodrigue home was completely destroyed by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. This new hurricane-resistant panel house will sit on a platform several feet off the ground, protecting it from water damage caused by hurricanes and big storms. The Lodrigues moved in hours after they were given keys at a dedication ceremony.
During the convention, MDS set up a makeshift project site on the parking lot of the San José Convention Center. About 250 convention participants of all ages volunteered for two-and-a-half hour shifts to build panel walls for the new house.—MDS
