One Saturday on the farm in Iowa
posted by Tim Nafziger on 06/12/11 at 11:27 PMThis weekend, Charletta and I headed out to to the Erb homestead in Kalona, Iowa, for a visit. We joined some friends of the family for a Saturday full of adventures around the farm. Through the photos and captions below, you can get a taste of what we did together. This photo is from the night before, but the baby ducklings are too cute to leave out. Gary is incubating duck eggs to raise the next generation. To see more adorable photos from the duckling photo shoot click here.
These are the cows.
The first chore of the day is feeding the calves a mixture of corn and protein pellets. Kevin stood in the trough to spread around the feed.
After spreading feed for the calves, Kevin hops out of the trough.
Then it is on to the ducks and geese on the riding mower.
Kevin tips the last of the feed into the pen with the ducks and chickens.
The proudest chicken on the farm is Leo the rooster, who disregards the fences and barriers set up to keep him in his place.
Charletta and Tasha check the roosts for eggs from overnight.
Gary and Kevin head out around the trees to the baby chickens.
Kevin's job is to spread out the baby chicks' bedding.
Gary recently moved a herd of sheep into the walnut grove, where we head next.
I thought you'd like this up close and personal portrait of sheep number 36.
After all the feeding was done, we headed to the garden to pick strawberries.
Few things are tastier than fresh, ripe strawberries in June.
Sylvia makes sure to pick out the few rotten ones.
Leo the rooster even helped out by recycling the strawberries we didn't want.
After picking strawberries, we pick tasty green lettuce for supper.
Charletta heads back to the house with a harvest of lettuce and strawberries.
Then is was time for visiting family. The first stop was to visit a cousin's new baby, sleeping away peacefully.
Then it is on to Pleasantview to visit Grandma Bernice.
Pleasantview has a particularly elaborate marble roller including a xylophone for marbles to roll across.
They also have a bird with the same colors as the xylophone.
The next visit was to Grandma Nita. She shares a devotional reading with us from Rejoice!
We love it when Grandma laughs.
On the way home, we stop at JW's Grocery. While Charletta picks out flowers on sale, I took this shot of the grain bin.
When we get back to the farm, Uncle Terry stops by on his four wheeler for a visit.
I wander out behind the farm and took these pictures of clouds and beams of sunlight in the cornfield.
I always enjoy the shafts of light coming through clouds, but I rarely can get a good picture of it.
The grain wagons on the back of the farm, on the other hand, are always there, winter and summer.
There are always new ways to look at things.
Ray likes posing with this stuffed squirrel, which was slain by an Erb golf ball gone wild. It is forever enshrined on a plaque to tell the story, holding it's own demise.
After Ray gets tired of the stuffed squirrel, we decide to get him a kitten from an Amish farm advertising free kittens in the Kalona News.
Kitteh quickly adjusted to it's new habitat away from the Amish chicken house, and into the minivan cup holder.
After we got back home, it's time to plant some petunias that Gary got from the neighbors.
Charletta, Tasha and I fill Sylvia's planters on the back patio.
Then it's time for a dip in the pool. I was too busy splashing and swimming to take any photos, so you'll have to settle for the aftermath.
After that, I steal away to take photos during my favorite time of the day: the hour before sunset. The smoke from the outdoor stove plays through the shafts of sunlight above the wheel barrow.
Gary and Kevin get the campfire ready for marshmallows after supper.
The fire waited for us while we were eating.
Then, it is dark and the marshmallows came out.
Kevin figures out that he could hold very still and show up normally in the long-exposure photo in the dark. In this photo he tells me he was watching the moon.
All good things must come to an end. Eventually the last marshmallow is eaten, and the last s'more is made. Everyone heads inside to bed.
Gradually, the house becomes quiet, except at four o'clock in the morning when Kitteh starts crying until Ray lets it up onto the bed.
Even the flowers are in their beds.
